Q.)What can I do for my dry, dull hair?
A.)
We have found this to be a very common question. There are two reasons
we get this question so often. One is that the expectation many people
have is that natural African-American hair is going to appear shiny and
smooth, similar to permed black hair or to Caucasian, Asian or other
hair. This is not a realistic expectation since African-American hair
reflects light differently due to the structure of the cuticles.
When the outer layers of the hair lay flat which they tend to do with
other hair types or when the hair is relaxed, the hair will better
reflect light. When the out layer is more raised, as is the case with
natural African hair, the hair will tend to absorb light and not appear
as shiny. Before you do too much to try to make your hair shiny,
particularly by adding a lot of oil to it, it's important to get the
proper expectations for what it should look like when it's
healthy.
